Improving your self-esteem may seem like an impossible task, however with the right support and a growth mindset, you can improve this aspect of your life.
Before we take a look at methods for improving our self-esteem, let’s talk a little bit about what it means to have a ‘growth mindset.’
There are two different mindsets that a person can have. These are known as ‘fixed mindset’ and ‘growth mindset.’ Depending on which mindset that you have, will depend on how you behave when faced with various situations.
Having a growth mindset means that you are more open to change and more likely to accept challenges and take up new opportunities with a ‘can-do’ sort of attitude.
In order to improve your self-esteem, you may also need to adapt your mindset by trying to be more motivated and optimistic about change and reaching goals.
Boosting your self-esteem begins with being kind to yourself. This does not mean that you need to love every little thing about yourself, we all have flaws and it is important that we acknowledge these too! However, it is much easier to acknowledge our downfalls and dismiss our positive aspects. Therefore, we need to start giving ourselves credit for our successes and telling ourselves that we can achieve our goals and we can make it to where we would like to be.
If you have never had a growth mindset before, and have always struggled with being kind to yourself, then this may not be very easy to do.
But remember, that it is okay to start small! Small steps in the right direction are much better than taking no steps at all.
Why not try to keep a positivity journal? At the end of each day, write down at least one thing that you did well; something that you are proud of, something that you never thought you could have achieved this time last year. This could be something simple such as getting up early and having a productive day, or it could be something big that you have achieved, such as getting a promotion at work.
Whatever it is, big or small, it is important and you should own it and acknowledge it.
Talk through your achievements with others, try and look at all of the things that you did well in the run up to your success before looking at the things that you can improve on.
Some people find talking out loud to themselves and saying some form of positive mantra can help to boot their self-esteem. This could be something simple such as ‘I am enough’, ‘I am good at what I do’, ‘I can achieve this’ and so on and so forth. Why not try to come up with your own positive mantra? Try and say this to yourself 3-5 times in a row each morning before you start your day! You may also want to create a different mantra to say before you go to bed at the end of the day!
Mantra’s can help up to build that growth mindset that we touched upon earlier, and in the process, can help to build our self-esteem.
