The Birthday Cake – by Aimee Flynn
One candle on the birthday cake
Tiny hands, tiny feet, big smile
No idea what was happening
At least not for a while
Five candles on the birthday cake
Tears because the flavour is wrong
Surrounded by friends and presents
Such a shame that they don’t last long
Thirteen candles on the birthday cake
Latest style, new phone, new hair
Feeling like a grown-up
A curfew? That’s not fair.
Sixteen candles on the birthday cake
First job, first boyfriend, first kiss
Heading off to college
Opportunities not to miss
Twenty-one candles on the birthday cake
Cap and gown with a degree
Lots of happy memories
Is that a ring I see?
Thirty candles on the birthday cake
A small group of friends, here to stay
Time to settle down
Married with a baby on the way
Sixty-five candles on the birthday cake
A celebration to be had
Grandchildren running wild
Retirement is not so bad
Eighty candles on the birthday cake
Make a wish one final time
It is time to reminisce
On this wonderful life of mine
