No Bra Day

Who left their bra at home today?
I DID!
And it feels glorious.

But why are people going braless today?…

No Bra Day is an observation day that began in 2011 as a means of raising awareness for breast cancer.

Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer across the world, with approximately 2.5 million new cases last year alone. Therefore, I wanted to share some helpful resources about checking your boobs, so that you can spot any concerns as early as possible and get yourself checked by your GP.

When should I start checking my boobs?
As early and as young as possible!
It is important that you get to know your ‘normal’ from an early age, this will make it easier to spot any concerns that may arise. While breast cancer is less common in younger women, those who are diagnosed young tend to experience a more aggressive form of the disease (usually as a result of late diagnoses and treatment.)

How often should I check my boobs?
At least once per month.
However, it can be beneficial to check at different times throughout the month as we can experience changes with our hormones – It is good to know what are typical changes are.

What should I be looking for?
– Skin changes: such as puckering or dimpling
– Unusual lumps and thickening
– Liquid coming from your nipple
– Nipple is pulled inwards or has changed direction
– Unsual lumps or swelling in your armpit or around your collarbone
– Constant or unusual pain in your breast, pec or armpit
– A sudden or unusual change in size or shape
– A rash or crusting on or around your nipple

I only have smaller boobs, am I still at risk?
Yes!
Breast cancer is not just dependant on the size of your breasts. In fact, did you know that men can also be diagnosed with breast cancer?
It occurs in breast tissue – which each and every one of us has!

How do I check my boobs?
There is not really a wrong way to check your breasts. The best advice is that you both LOOK & FEEL your breast as well as your armpits and up over your collarbones for any changes.
